Did you know it takes someone less than 5 seconds to make a judgment on your website and decide whether they will hang around? First impressions really do matter!

Your home page needs to grab your viewers’ attention straight away and should be clear to your potential clients from the moment they hit your website how you can help them or they likely won’t hang around long enough to find out!

If it’s not clear what you do in that first moment, your potential client:

  • Will leave your website and go elsewhere since they don’t want to waste time figuring it out

  • Can’t tell people about you since they don’t actually know what you do

  • Won’t connect with you, meaning they won’t trust you and ultimately don’t end up making a purchase or booking your service

The best way to catch their attention and keep them around is with a killer tagline front and centre on your home page. You can download your free workbook below so that you can follow along and create your own killer tagline!

Let’s get started with writing your Killer Tagline!

A killer tagline needs to speak to your ideal customer directly, by using their language, speaking to their pain points and showing them how your product or service will solve their frustrations. It helps your viewer decide if your website is the right fit for them.

There are 6 elements to a killer tagline, so I’ll break these down:

What you do: If you are a wedding photographer, graphic designer, {insert title here}, then state that. Last thing your viewer wants is to be looking for a florist, find a website with amazing bouquets in the main image, only to start reading and find out it’s a garden club instead

Who you serve: Do you work with brides on a budget or entrepreneurs? Tell your viewer. You want your ideal client to know you are speaking directly to them

Location: If your business has a home base, tell your potential clients where it is. If you’re a wedding photographer in London, but they’re planning a Hawaii wedding, clearly your not a good fit, so let them know right away. NOTE: If you do not have a set location, you can skip this one

How you are different: It can be hard to figure out how you differ from your competition, especially when starting out. If you are unsure, skip this for now, just come back and add it later

Why your service will change their life: Your viewer has likely found you while looking for an answer to a problem they have. Let them know you can solve that problem so they’ll stay to find out how

Call to action: You know your website better than anyone, so direct your viewer where to go next. You want your viewer to make it to your money making pages, so make sure you lead them there

Now to put the elements of your killer tagline together!

A couple of things to know first:

  • You don’t need full sentences as long as the tagline is clear and makes sense to the viewer

  • You want it to be 1-2 sentences long at the most

  • The elements can be arranged in any order that works best for you

  • Your tagline will change over time as you test, adjust and perfect it

On to the fun part: Arranging the elements of your killer tagline! You want to play around with different combinations of the 6 elements until you find something that is catchy and flows together well.

Woohoo, you now have a killer tagline to help you up your home page game!

Using your new Tagline

Once you’ve crafted the perfect tagline, it’s time to put it to good use! A tagline can give a lot of bang for your buck aside from introducing your website, and here’s why:

  • Since your tagline is a clear and concise explanation of what you do and who you help, it makes a great description to use on your social media profiles where you have a limited number of characters to work with

  • You can use it as part of your email signature so that your communication with a customer has a consistent message across all platforms. Added bonus, the constant reminder will keep you top of mind to the viewer when they need your service

  • How many times have you found a flyer or business card you collected from someone and you have no idea what it is for? If you include your tagline, your potential client will always remember what you do

  • Ever had someone ask you what you do and you either freeze up or ramble a response? A tagline can help you get straight to the point! And, since you’re not freezing up, your passion for what you do has a chance to really shine

Now that you have your killer tagline, go and add it to your website home page so if your ideal client was to go to your website right now, you can be confident they’d hang around!
